What are the common bar code symbologies?

Symbologies are like languages. Unless you're using the correct symbology your bar code may be unreadable.

Although each symbology is unique all share common elements such as bars, spaces, quiet zone and human readables.

Some popular bar code symbologies:

Code 39

POSTNET

EAN (European Article Number) is the twelve digit system used throughout the world for bar coding general merchandise.

UPC (Universal Product Code), a subset of the EAN system, is used primarily in the US and Canada.

ISBN and ISSN
